Buhari Meets Crisis Mediator, ECOWAS Urge Malian Soldiers To Return To Barracks

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday, held a meeting with former Nigerian President and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) mediator for Mali, Dr Goodluck Jonathan.

The meeting on the political crisis in Mali is happening at a time of increased tension following an ongoing mutineer by soldiers.

President Buhari and four other ECOWAS leaders visited Bamako, the capital of Mali, in July, followed by a virtual extraordinary summit of the sub-regional body.

Dr Jonathan, who was in Mali, last week, recounted his meetings with the stakeholders, including political and religious leaders, Ambassadors of US, France, Russia, Germany, European Union, and other key partners for peace in the country.

The regional bloc headquarters in Abuja, have also released a statement on the unfolding situation in Mali.

The bloc condemned the rebellion in Mali and rejected any attempt of unconstitutional change in the country.

The statement also urged soldiers to return to their barracks.

The United States Government has expressed its concern about the situation unfolding in Mali.

“The U.S. is opposed to all unconstitutional changes of government whether in the streets or by security forces,” tweeted J. Peter Pham, the State Department’s special envoy for the Sahel region.
