Army Kills 20 Boko-Haram Insurgents In Borno, Recovers Arms

Soldiers of the Operation Lafiya Dole on Sunday were locked in a fierce encounter with members of the terrorist groups, Boko Haram and Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP), leading to the death of 20 insurgents.

The offensive operation was conducted on Sunday by troops of the 130 Battalion, supported by the Army Super Camp, in the northwest region of Baga town.

“The criminals armed with mortars, rocket-propelled grenades and small arms were heading to attack villages surrounding Baga when the troops attacked their convoy with overwhelming firepower killing 20 BHT/ISWAP criminals,” Maj. Gen. John Enenche, coordinator of the Defence Media Operation said in a statement.

He added that arms were captured including six AK 47 rifles, 520 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and five 36 hand grenades.

Nine of the soldiers, however, sustained injuries during the gun battle and have been admitted at the Sector 3 hospital for treatment.

“The Chief of Army Staff commends the gallant troops for their professionalism and directs them to remain resolute towards eradicating the criminals from the North East,” Maj. Gen. Enenche said.

Operations of the Nigerian Army have also recently led to the killing and arrest of notorious gang members in Benue, arrest of militia members in Nasarawa, and destruction of pirates and militant hideouts in Rivers. Numerous arms were recovered during all of the military raids.
