A commissioner in North-central Nigeria has been killed and a local government chairman abducted as insecurity heightens across Nigeria.

Abebayo Solomon, Commissioner for Pension Board in Kogi State, North-central Nigeria has been killed by an armed gang, authorities in the state confirmed on Sunday.

HumAngle gathered that Solomon was killed on Saturday, May 1 at Eruku village a few kilometres from Egbe,  the border town between Kwara and Kogi states.

The assailants also abducted Pius Kolawole, the Chairman of Yagba East Local Government, and injured two others in the attack.

“The Commissioner was killed in the attack, and contrary to reports it was only one person that was [involved] and that is the Local Government chairman, two persons sustained injuries from the attack,” DSP William Ovye Aya, Kogi State Police PRO told HumAngle.

The Police PRO said that the murdered commissioner was travelling from Ilorin to Kabba when his vehicle was shot at the  Eruku village by an armed gang.

Solomon’s body has however been deposited at ECWA Hospital, Egbe, while the whereabouts of Kolawole hangs in the balance.

Also reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ayuba Ede, disclosed that an intensive investigation has been set in motion to fish out the perpetrators of the heinous act.

Kogi State has in recent times continued to experience several kidnapping cases and robberies, with many blaming the criminal activities on the deplorable section of the roads.

Clifford Ordia, senator representing Edo Central in the National Assembly,  a few days ago was attacked twice on the Okene-Lokoja and Lokoja-Abaji roads by armed groups in Kogi State on his way to Abuja.

Ordia, who is the Senate Committee Chairman on Local and Foreign Debts, narrated his ordeal to reporters on April 28 in Abuja.

He said he was travelling along the Okene-Lokoja and Lokoja-Abaji roads on Monday when the armed group opened fire on his convoy while returning to Abuja from his hometown in Edo State.

The lawmaker explained that three police officers attached to him sustained injuries during the exchange of fire between the criminals.

He however stated  that one of the wounded policemen was in a critical condition but responding to treatment in one of the hospitals in Abuja.
