Angry Mob Lynches 9 ADF Rebels In DR Congo

Although the military has appealed to citizens to desist from jungle justice, the atmosphere is palpable with anger.

Nine persons  suspected to be members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) or their collaborators were on Thursday, July 1, 2021 lynched and burnt alive in Mambila Kipe Yayo quarter situated in the periphery of Komanda (Basili chiefdom) in the south of Irumu territory of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to Daniel Herabo, President of the local civil society association, “the roasted persons were found in a house. The population first started by burning down the house before lynching and burning the nine persons.”

“Only one woman succeeded in escaping from the house. She was later arrested by the security forces who had been dispatched to the scene,” the Komanda civil society president revealed.

Other sources told HumAngle that besides the nine suspected ADF rebel fighters, 11 other persons were killed by the same crowd which was made up mainly of youngsters.

The local population of Komanda accused members of the Banyabwisha community from North Kivu of collaborating with ADF combatants.

The situation in Komanda remained tense as this report was being filed.

Meanwhile, the country’s army said the situation is under control after the incident.

Lt. Jules Ngonga, army spokesperson in Ituri, advised that the population must collaborate with the security services by denouncing suspected individuals instead of taking the law into their own hands.

Normal activities were paralysed the whole of Thursday in Komanda and the movement of displaced persons was also reported.

Meanwhile, five ADF rebels who were suspected to have taken part in last week’s attack on Rwangoma quarter in the town of Beni in North Kivu were killed on Thursday, July 1, 2021 by soldiers of the Congolese national army.

Five arms were recovered and the soldiers of the armed forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo continue to pursue the terrorists in the Virunga National Park, the army spokesperson said.

Ten persons were killed in Beni town on Wednesday night till Thursday morning and the attack was blamed on ADF rebels.

Less than a week earlier, the town was shaken by two suicide bomb attacks which wounded four persons and killed the suicide bomber himself.
