Aisha Buhari Deletes Twitter Account, President’s Handle Still Active

Less than 24 hours after suspension of Twitter operations in Nigeria, the President's wife has deactivated.

Following the ban of the microblogging platform, Twitter, on Friday June 4 by Nigerian Government, Aisha Buhari, the wife of the president, has deactivated her account in a short announcement on Friday evening.

“I will be deactivating my Twitter account for now. Long live Federal Republic of Nigeria,” she wrote shortly before deactivating her account.

The ban on Twitter came after a tweet by Nigeria’s President Muhamadu  Buhari, was deleted by the platform for breaching its rules.

However, less than 24 hours after announcing the indefinite suspension of the social media platform, the President’s twitter account is yet to be deactivated.

The President’s aides on media, Bashir Ahmed, Garba Shehu, and also the ministry of information among others are yet to deactivate their accounts.

Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture who had earlier claimed the platform’s objective in Nigeria was “suspect,” said the government had decided to ban it “indefinitely,” two days after Twitter deleted President Muhammadu Buhari’s post threatening violence.

Some Nigerians as of Saturday morning could not access the social media network, except through Virtual Private Network (VPN) providers, who afford the opportunity to establish a protected network connection when using public networks.
