5,342 Central African Republic Refugees Arrived Cameroon In Jan. 2021 — UNHCR

Since the beginning of the post-election violence in the Central African Republic, 5,342 refugees from that country have arrived in the East region of Cameroon, a new data released by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) revealed.

In the just-published information bulletin by the  UNHCR, as of Jan. 20, 2021, 4,891 Central African Republic refugees had arrived in Cameroon, and within a space of two weeks, another 450 arrived in the country in spite of the closure of the border between the two countries.

The UNHCR revealed that of the 4,891 Central African Republic refugees who arrived Cameroon as of Jan. 20, 250 were screened through the Garoua-Boulai transit centre where they were educated on anti-COVID 19 measures such as the washing of hands and the wearing of face masks.

They were also sensitized on the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV-AIDS.

By January, 2,687 of the new refugees had been transferred to Gado where they have been attached to host families while 571 refugees expressed their desire to be settled in the Gado reception centre.

The UN High Commission for Refugees has announced they would be transferred to the centre within the next few days.

“Negotiations are currently going on with schools in Gado for 134 children among the refugees to be enrolled in school so that they can continue their education.” the UNHCR revealed.

Cameroon currently hosts 90,000 Central African Republic refugees who have been escaping from the war in their country since 2014.
