Five persons were confirmed killed on Sunday in Sake, North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, after heavy rainfall.
Sources in the village of Sake said four other persons including a child were also missing while several houses were destroyed by the floods that came with the rainfall.
“There have been heavy rains here since before midday this Sunday. The waters of the rains overflowed and even carried away persons as well as their houses,” a resident of Sake told HumAngle on Sunday.
He said protection workers were still searching for missing persons.
“Right here, we can already report five persons dead and four missing including a baby. We call on the government to come to our assistance,” he said, adding that residents always fear for the loss of lives and property each time it rains.
Descartes Akilimali, the Commissioner in charge of humanitarian affairs said the provincial government is preparing to intervene to help those affected by the disaster.
It should be recalled that at the beginning of the month of October this year, at least six people were killed following floods occasioned by the Kihira river overflowing its banks in Sake.
The Congolese head of state President Felix Tshisekedi who was in Goma at the time of the disaster visited the affected families.
