40 Killed As CODECO Rebels Sack Fataki Hospital In DR Congo

The death is a result of clashes between the DR Congo army and CODECO rebels.

Rebels of the Congo Economic Development Cooperative (CODECO) group on Tuesday June 15, 2021 attacked the main hospital of the commercial centre of Fataki, situated about 80 kilometres from Bunia town in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A total of 40 CODECO militiamen have been reported killed since the skirmishes began on Saturday, June 12, 2021.

“They came yesterday, Wednesday to attack the army high command and on Tuesday they attacked Fataki. They looted the hospital carrying away drugs and beds,”  an army source that opted for anonymity told HumAngle.

“All the population has fled and taken refuge in the neighbouring locality of Djaiba. There are only military commandos in Fataki now,” the source added, noting that the situation is relatively calm now.

The fighting on Wednesday between the national army and CODECO led to the momentary interruption of traffic on the national highway number 27 between Bunia and Mahagi.

Crowds of people were reported heading to the Rho site near a United Nations Blue Helmets camp while others have taken to the Bule highway in the Bahema Badjere chiefdom.

Local sources in Fataki revealed that clashes between the army and CODECO fighters became intense last Saturday, June 12, 2021.
