172 Players, Officials Test Positive For COVID-19 During CHAN
African Nations Championship, CHAN, ends with 172 players, officials testing positive to COVID-19 during the three-week competition in Cameroon.
One hundred and seventy-two persons, including players and officials, tested positive for COVID-19 during the three-week African Nations Championship (CHAN) which ended in the Cameroon capital, Yaounde on Sunday.
According to the local organising committee, those who tested positive included players, trainers, referees, officials of the Confederation African Football (CAF), volunteers and medical staff.
However, one hundred and sixteen of those who tested positive were successfully treated while the rest remain under treatment and observation.
During the competition, Basile Yankam, a Cameroonian defender tested positive for the virus, but the information was not made public by the Cameroonian delegation.
The Democratic Republic of Congo has the highest cases with 10 of its players and officials, including their coach, Florent Ibenge among the positive patients.
The Tanzanian contingent was the second hardest hit with nine positive cases: seven trainers and two players.
Only three teams of the 16 participating teams did not register any positive cases, namely Namibia, Uganda and Guinea.
“Generally, only 4 per cent of members of participating delegations were tested positive for COVID-19 which is more than twice less than the number of positive cases detected among the ordinary populations tested during the competition”, the local organising committee revealed on Sunday.
According to the World Health Organisation (WH0) statistics, as of Saturday, Feb. 6, 2021, Cameroon registered 30,313 COVID-19 positive cases with 474 deaths.
