Kano State Fire Service says 134 lives and properties worth N635 million were lost to fire incidents in the state between January 1 and December 31, 2020.
Sa’idu Ibrahim Muhammad, Spokesperson of the Service, made this known on Tuesday in Kano, Northwest Nigeria and Northern commercial nerve centre.
He disclosed that the service also saved 1,077 lives and property worth over N2 billion in 786 fire incidents during the year.
He said most of the fire incidents were caused by carelessness in handling cooking gas, use of inferior electrical appliances and poor wiring in houses.
According to him, the service recorded about 693 rescue calls and 184 and alarms during the year 2020.
He stated that the service plans to retrain its 350 staff in 2021 for effective performance.
The Spokesperson also warned Kano residents to always handle fire with care to prevent fire incidents.
“Parents and guardians should stop from sending under aged children to fetch water from wells, ponds or rivers alone,” he said.
