10 LGAs Account For 83% Of COVID-19 In Kano

Kano State government, Northwest Nigeria, says that 10 local government areas account for 83 per cent of COVID-19 cases in the state.

The State Coordinator, Technical Response of the Taskforce Committee on Coronavirus, Dr Tijjani Hussein, made the revelation during a presentation on Kano Epidemiology of COVID-19 Response at the Government House on Saturday.

Hussein said most of the affected local government areas were in Kano metropolis, while few were in rural and semi-urban areas.

The coordinator noted that the problem might not be unconnected with the high population in the metropolitan local government areas, especially as the virus had gone into community transmission.

Hussein named the most affected local government areas as Tarauni, Nassarawa, Fagge, Gwale, Dala and Kano Municipal.

Others are Kumbotso, Ungoggo, Wudil and Dambatta local government areas.

He said that as of Saturday, August 15, Kano State had recorded, 1,678 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 258 active cases and 1,366 discharged as well as 54 deaths, representing 3.22 per cent mortality rate.

Hussein, however, said that the committee was facing the problem of concealment of confirmed cases by communities and called on the people to support the government in its fight against the pandemic by providing information.

Meanwhile, the state Governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, expressed worry over how the people were flouting COVID-19 safety protocols.

He urged security agents and stakeholders to be up and doing to enlighten people on the need to strictly obey the protocols, especially the wearing of face masks and washing hands.

Ganduje said the state government had distributed about four million face masks and that another one million would be produced and distributed to the people.

He said it was regrettable that the government had spent millions of naira in production of the face masks but people were not wearing them despite the fact that they got them free.
