The police in Anambra State, Southeast Nigeria, have arrested Onyinye Chime, 25, for allegedly murdering her boyfriend, Eleyi Azubuike, 29, in his apartment at Ochiagha Street, Nkpor in Idemili North Local Government Area.
The police said Chime murdered the victim with a kitchen knife inside his room on Wednesday night over some disagreement pertaining their relationship.
When the police visited the scene following a report, they saw the deceased in the pool of his own blood and rushed him to Iyi Enu Mission Hospital, Ogidi, for medical attention but he was certified dead by the doctor on duty.
SP Haruna Mohammed, the spokesman for the Police Command in Anambra State, said the corpse had been deposited at the hospital morgue for autopsy.
“He was certified dead by the medical doctor on arrival. Corpse was deposited at the hospital mortuary for autopsy.
“A careful observation on the deceased body revealed stab wound on his chest while a blood stained Kitchen knife was also recovered as exhibit at the scene,” Mohammed wrote in his diary.
He said preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased allegedly impregnated the suspect and wanted an abortion which she declined.
Mohammed said a fight broke out when the suspect demanded for some money for her upkeep and the deceased declined.
“That eventually led to a scuffle which resulted in the deceased being stabbed to death, the case is under investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident,” he said.
Similarly, the police arrested 41-year-old Ogbonna Nwankwo for allegedly attempting to kill one Bella Joseph, 29 years old, for ritual purpose, Mohammed said.
He said Ogbonna failed in his attempt to cut off the breast of the woman but inflicted deep cut in her stomach which disemboweled her and made her intestine to come out.
She was said to be resident at Dollar Inn Motel, Ihite, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, while the suspect also stayed in the same area.
“Suspect attempted to remove the victim’s breast after stabbing her with knife causing her intestine to come out before his eventual arrest.
“Suspect allegedly attempted to murder the lady inside the motel room by stabbing victim with a knife on her stomach and tried to cut off her right breast using same knife probably for ritual purpose thinking she was dead.
“Her shout for help which attracted attention of the motel manager, police operatives attached to Umunze Division and the victim rushed to Specialist Hospital, Nnewi for treatment.
“The suspect who was seriously manhandled by an angry mob and beaten to stupor was equally arrested by the police and taken to the hospital for treatment under police guard.
“A blood stained knife was recovered at the scene as exhibit,” Mohammed wrote.
The Commissioner of Police has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal investigation Department for discreet investigation in order to unravel the actual circumstances surrounding the incident, he stated.
This is the third reported case of possible knife attacks in the state in three weeks.
On August 9, 43 years old Azubuike Ekwegbalu, a Senior Special Assistant to Gov. Willie on Security, was murdered in his Commissioners’ Quarters apartment in Awka.
According to Mohammed, a female suspect has been arrested in relation to the killing of Ekwegbalu.
